    Overview

    The department commenced its journey as the Department of Forestry in 1998 with a group of young, devoted and well trained teachers who dreamt of a green Bangladesh. They overcame challenges and surmounted obstacles through hard work, devotion under a coordinated team effort. With this major breakthrough the department was renamed as the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science (DFES) in 2007. At present it has around 200 students and a total of 22 academic staffs. The department is equipped with a remote sensing and GIS (Geographical Information System) laboratory, a forest ecology and management laboratory, and a large nursery for field research and demonstration. It has also a rich seminar library with a good collection of recent text book, articles, field documents, monographs, e-books etc. on the broader aspects of forest and environment. Research on various contemporary issues are being conducted regularly by the teachers with active participation of the students, and a good number of articles are being published in different national and international peer reviewed journals every year enlightening the name and fame of the department. At present, the department offers B.Sc. (Hons.) in Forestry, M.Sc. in Forestry (General) and M.Sc. (Thesis) in Forestry degrees. The department produces around 35 graduates and 30 postgraduates each semester who are placed in diverse fields of biodiversity conservation, forest management, environmental governance and climate change adaptation and mitigation. Graduates with excellent grades are also employed as faculty members in this department as well as in other academic institutions particularly in the forestry and environment related disciplines. The graduates of the department are being outstanding in achieving prestigious international scholarships and bursaries for post-graduation and PhD through participation in competitive processes. International and national development organizations, civil service under forest and other cadres are some other opportunities that our graduates are availing on and off. Apart from regular academic activities, the department also arranges technical seminars, thematic presentation, field visit, observance of national and international forest and environment related days and events. Collaboration and exchange programs with state forest department, development partners, civil society and other organizations are routine events of DFES.
