The Computer Center (CC) of SUST was established in March,1991 under the supervision of the department of Physics located in 1st floor of A building . One Alpha Micro multiuser system (Mini-computer) with six dummy terminals & IBM compatible computers (880286 & 880386) & two dot matrix printers to provide fully integrated set of information support to the teaching. The main objective is to support academic, research and administrative functions of the University, in 1995, it became Computer & Information Center & enhancing its scope to short training program for all & services wing for providing maintenance & trouble shooting services to the computers & peripherals of the universities departments & offices.
The CIC has served over the years as the hub for computer related services in the campus with the commissioning of the university–wide fiber optic campus network in the year 1998,under direct supervision of Prof. Dr. M Zafar Iqbal. The CIC is in a unique position in providing computing and network facilities to the campus to serve the University for all its IT needs. Now it has strong IT infrastructure which consist of state of the art technology high speed Networking infrastructure which covering wired & wireless all academic, administrative, dormitories & all buildings & most of the open spaces under coverage, Tier-3 Data center 24/7 with cloud & virtualization facilities high redundancy, University Automation Systems, IP based campus surveillance systems, Unified communication systems with 150 MBPS bandwidth from two ISP’s 130 Mbps from BTCL with 20 Mbps from Other ISP as backup for Internet facility, router for routing, a firewall for internet security, high configuration server as Mails server, proxy server, web server, application servers are running in the virtual machines in DC.
Three projects “SAAON” under Science & Technology Ministry, “Total Computerization of SUST”(HEQEP CP-558) & “Enhancement of Library & IT Facilities, SUST” (HEQEP CP-3676) contributed a lot for achieving the current position of SUST IT infrastructure.
Bangladesh Research & Education Network (BdREN) already established high speed connectivity backbone within the universities & sylhet region POP in SUST & virtual classroom in the IICT building of SUST by the direct cooperation of the University authority & Computer & Information Center.
